A Day in the Life – Digital Media

I’ve never really thought about how much time I spend on various websites or apps, so for this assignment I’ve decided to check my phone’s screen time. This past week, I spent nearly 8 hours on my Kindle app and about 3.5 hours on Facebook. The third app on that list is Angry Birds 2, my newest obsession. And no, I’m not proud of it.

Digital media plays a major role in my daily life, both at work and at home. On a personal level, when it comes to Social Media, my first choice is typically Facebook. I love reading about the newest happenings in my friends and family’s lives. I also very much enjoy the never ending black hole of videos I seem to accidentally stumble across. My second choice in social media would either be Instagram or Pinterest. I use both to discover new recipes and craft ideas.

For work, I will also use Facebook to post about any volunteer work we do for our bank, or any Client Appreciation Days we host throughout the year. While some of these posts are to bring awareness to our company, I truly enjoy the work I do to help others. More often that not, I will use these posts to remember opportunities and experiences I might otherwise not have had. I am often the mastermind behind our Client Appreciation Days, so I will search through Pinterest and Instagram for new decorations and ideas to include in these festivities.

For the most part, I am indifferent about the use of social media sites. However, my biggest peeve is when all I can see is political and religious posts. I understand we each have the freedom to speech, and I would NEVER fault someone for stating their opinion, but what I don’t appreciate are the posts that bash and degrade what some don’t agree with. The golden rule should be applied in these situations, and I find it frustrating when others don’t keep that in mind.

Email is involved with many of my work activities whether it be through responding to co-workers or emailing clients. As bad as it is, my favorite emails are the those that state someone’s information has been compromised through fraud. As cynical as it may be, it is extremely entertaining to see how exactly that information had been compromised. I feel bad for those people that had their wallets stolen or computers hacked, but it is interesting to read about someone letting a stranger into their house and giving out their information after being convinced to sign up for a fake newspaper subscription.

Businesses always seem to provide the perfect advertisement for any given situation. Whether it is through Facebook, Google’s homepage, or in a scene of a movie, companies have advertisements place to bring attention to their businesses. The marketing field has adapted to the new desire for technology by utilizing digital ads such as bulletin boards and tv commercials. Rather than appealing only to the older generations through newspaper clippings and community boards, companies have begun to use digital ads to appeal to the younger generations as well. I often receive emails with incentives to visit websites and their corresponding stores, restaurants, etc.

When I receive personal emails from stores or the movie theaters, I always look at the headline to decide if it’s work reading or not. If their marketing emails don’t catch my attention in those few words, then I’m almost certain the rest of the email won’t hold much interest either.

Especially on my way to work, I’ll go back and forth with listening to music and podcasts. There are also times when I prefer listing to a book rather than reading the physical copy. I have a tendency to get bored of a single thing after a short while, so flipping between mediums and topics helps prevent that boredom. Many of these streaming companies only charge for their ad-free prime accounts, while their basic accounts typically cost nothing because other companies pay to place their advertisements.

All in all, I would say digital media is the future of Marketing. Not only is digitalized media and marketing relevant in today’s society, it is also extremely convenient for both the business and the consumer.
